About the Landau Variation

The Landau Variation arises from the Schallopp Defense of the Quiet Variation, where White exchanges with 5. cxd5 cxd5 and probes b7 with 6. Qb3. Black guards the pawn with 6...Qc8 instead of the more usual 6...Qc7, placing the queen on the open c-file. After 7. Bd2 e6 8. Na3, White develops the queen's knight to the rim, where it eyes b5 and c4. The near-symmetrical pawn structure leads to a quiet positional game.
