Train it in TheoriaAbout the Steinitz-Rosenthal Variation
The Steinitz-Rosenthal Variation is the principal line of the Steinitz Defense, 3...g6. After 4. d4 exd4, White does not recapture on d4. Instead 5. Nd5 leaves Black a pawn ahead, and White gets central activity and faster development in return. Black can carry out the planned fianchetto with 5...Bg7, ignoring the knight. The alternative is 5...Nf6, which offers to trade off the d5 knight and also attacks e4, so White soon has to exchange on f6.
