Train it in TheoriaAbout the Winawer Defense
The Winawer Defense, also known as the Gothic Defense, is Black's most combative answer to the Three Knights Opening. Instead of 3...Nf6, which transposes to the Four Knights Game, Black strikes at e4 with the f-pawn in the manner of the Schliemann Defense. This loosens the kingside in return for activity. Unlike the Ruy Lopez version, White has not yet committed the bishop to b5, and the knight on c3 already supports e4, so White has several ways to exploit the early weakening.
Capturing with 4. exf5 is the most frequent reply, and Black then usually continues 4...Nf6, aiming for quick development and pressure on the e4-square. The central break 4. d4 is played less often but gives White the best practical results. 4. Bb5 transposes to the Dyckhoff Variation of the Schliemann Defense, and 4. d3 keeps the game quieter. Engines rate the position as clearly better for White, with 4. d4, 4. exf5 and 4. Bb5 as their top choices. Online results are nonetheless almost exactly even, which reflects how hard the resulting sharp positions are for both sides to handle.
