About the Classical Defense

The Classical Defense, 2...e6, is the most frequently played answer to the Trompowsky. Rather than spending another tempo on the knight with 2...Ne4 or inviting doubled pawns, Black opens the diagonal of the dark-squared bishop and prepares to meet Bxf6 with ...Qxf6. That recapture leaves Black's pawn structure intact and gives Black the bishop pair in return for some lost time with the queen. The pin on the f6-knight remains a nuisance, and Black must decide how and when to break it.

White's most common reply is 3. Nf3, which transposes to the Torre Attack: Classical Defense. The engine's top choice, 3. e4, is the Big Center Variation. White takes the full center at once and relies on the pin to restrain Black's counterplay. 3. c4 leads to the Indian Defense: Seirawan Attack, a more conventional queen's pawn structure. The immediate 3. Bxf6 concedes the bishop pair to change the structure early. The modest 3. e3, along with the engine-approved 3. Nd2, builds a quieter setup, and 3. e3 has the best White results among the main tries. The engine rates the position as roughly balanced, and online results are close to even with a slight edge for White.
