The Hector Gambit, 3. Bc4, does not recapture on e4 with the knight. White instead develops the bishop toward f7 and offers the pawn for quicker development. The same position can arise from the Scandinavian Defense by 1. e4 d5 2. Nc3 dxe4 3. Bc4. Black most often supports the extra pawn with 3...Nf6, and 3...e6 and 3...Bf5 are the other common replies. The engine gives Black a slight edge, although online results are close to even.
