The Thorold Variation of the Hamppe-Allgaier Gambit: after sacrificing a knight on f7, White plays 8. d4 to build a center and attack the exposed king.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Thorold Variation
The Thorold Variation is White's usual follow-up in the Hamppe-Allgaier Gambit. After the knight sacrifice 7. Nxf7 Kxf7, the move 8. d4 sets up a broad pawn center on d4 and e4. It also opens the c1-h6 diagonal, so the bishop can attack the advanced f4-pawn. Black has an extra piece, but the king stands uncastled on f7, and the half-open f-file gives White attacking chances. The position can also arise from a King's Gambit move order.
