The Erben Gambit arises when Black, after 3...d5 4. exd5 in the Mieses Variation, passes on the usual knight recapture 4...Nxd5 and plays 4...c6 instead. The pawn offer seeks to open lines and hurry Black's pieces out before White completes the g3 fianchetto, while keeping the e5-pawn as Black's central anchor. White, temporarily a pawn up with doubled d-pawns, must decide whether to cling to the extra material or return it for smooth development.
