The Cologne Gambit is a seldom-seen branch of the Ware Opening, reached after 1. a4 b6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 Nd7. Black meets the rook-pawn advance with ...b6, preparing a queenside fianchetto. White uses the time to stake out the center with d4 and develop the queen's knight. Despite the name, material remains level in the defining position, with pawns facing each other on d4 and d5 and White to move.
