Lemberger Gambit
- 1.Nf3Nf6
- 2.e4
A05 gambit in which White meets 1...Nf6 with 2. e4, leaving the e-pawn for the knight to take; engine assessment and practical results both favor Black.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Lemberger Gambit
The Lemberger Gambit arises after 1. Nf3 Nf6 2. e4. White drops the flexible flank approach of the Zukertort and advances the king's pawn even though Black's knight already attacks the square. The move claims central space and opens a diagonal for the f1-bishop, but nothing protects e4, so Black can simply capture it. The reply 1...Nf6 is a frequent choice at grandmaster level, preferred by both Anand and Kasparov, partly because it discourages an ordinary 2. e4. The gambit is White's attempt to push the pawn anyway.
Accepting with 2...Nxe4 is by far the most frequent answer and also the engine's top choice. White's compensation is a modest lead in development and the prospect of gaining time against the centralized knight. With the e-pawn gone and the d-pawn unmoved, however, White has no foothold in the center, and the missing central pawn is generally judged more important than the extra tempi. The engine rates the position after 2. e4 as slightly better for Black.
Black can also decline and steer into main-line 1. e4 openings in which White's knight has already reached f3. The reply 2...c5 transposes to the Nimzowitsch Variation of the Sicilian Defense, 2...e5 gives Petrov's Defense, and 2...d6, the engine's second preference, keeps the knight on f6 and leaves the pawn structure undecided. For a player who chose 1. Nf3 to stay out of 1. e4 theory, these transpositions hand the choice of opening to Black.
In practice the gambit has a poor reputation. The Lichess opening wiki does not regard it as viable and notes that it scores badly at every level. Its Lichess record bears this out: Black wins more often than White, roughly 51% against 46%, which is unusual for a line in which White chooses the course. Draws are rare, at about 3%, reflecting the unbalanced material and the fast, mostly online games in which the position appears. Even so, a substantial number of online games reach it, enough to place it among the more frequently seen named positions in the database.
