A rare reply to 1...d5 in the Zukertort Opening: White develops the queen's knight to c3, blocking the c-pawn and keeping e4 in view.

About the Reversed Mexican Defense

The Reversed Mexican Defense arises after 1. Nf3 d5 2. Nc3. White develops both knights before touching a central pawn, the same knight pair Black uses in the Mexican Defense, here with an extra tempo. The knight on c3 blocks the c-pawn, so the Réti-style 2. c4 and similar queenside plans are off the table. Instead, the knight supports a later e4 and leaves White's central structure undecided. It is a much less common choice than 2. d4, 2. c4 or 2. g3.

Black has several sound replies. The most popular is 2...Nf6, which develops and keeps watch on e4. 2...d4 is the most direct: it gains space and gives the c3-knight an immediate question about where to go. 2...e6 is a quieter option that keeps the pawn chain solid. The engine also rates 2...c5 among Black's best moves, building a broad center while the white c-pawn cannot challenge it. The position is roughly level, and Black scores slightly better than White in online games.
