Benko Gambit line where White fianchettoes the king's bishop, keeping the extra pawn and castling rights while Black presses on the queenside.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Fianchetto Variation
Here White develops the f1-bishop on g2 instead of playing e4, which would allow the exchange ...Bxf1 and cost White the right to castle. The bishop avoids that exchange but remains largely passive, blunted by White's own pawn on d5. Black keeps the usual pressure on the a- and b-files and the long diagonal. Black most often castles with 9...O-O, and 9...Nbd7 is the main alternative and scores well. Engines give White a slight edge, though Black scores better in practice.
