A rare Bird Opening line in which White meets Black's kingside fianchetto with 3. b4, adding a Polish-style queenside expansion to the f4 setup.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Batavo-Polish Attack
The Batavo-Polish Attack grafts the Polish Opening's b-pawn advance onto the Bird. After 1. f4 Nf6 2. Nf3 g6, 3. b4 gains queenside space and prepares Bb2, reinforcing White's hold on e5 and opposing the long diagonal Black is about to occupy. Black usually answers 3...Bg7, with 3...d5 as the main alternative. The line is rarely played, and the engine assesses it as roughly level to marginally better for Black.
