Train it in TheoriaAbout the Vienna Hybrid
The Vienna Hybrid arises after 1. e4 e5 2. Bc4 Nf6 3. d3 Nc6 4. Nc3, when White develops the queen's knight rather than playing 4. Nf3, which would transpose to the Closed Variation of the Two Knights Defense, sometimes called the Modern Bishop's Opening. The name reflects the position's double origin: it is just as often reached from the Vienna Game, by 1. e4 e5 2. Nc3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. d3 or 1. e4 e5 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. Bc4 Nc6 4. d3. Keeping the king's knight on g1 leaves the f-pawn free, so f4 remains a standing option and the game can take on a King's Gambit character.
Black has several sound replies, and the engine rates the position as roughly balanced. At master level the most common choice is 4...Na5, a knight maneuver aimed at exchanging itself for the bishop on c4 or b3 and thereby securing the bishop pair; because White has already committed to d3, the bishop has limited room to avoid the trade. Online, simple development is more popular. 4...Bc5 is the most frequent reply, and White often answers it with 5. f4, transposing to the King's Gambit Declined. The second most common move, 4...Bb4, pins the c3-knight; the Hromádka Variation meets it with 5. Ne2, which lets White recapture on c3 with a piece should Black give up the bishop, while still keeping the f-pawn unobstructed. Quieter options include 4...d6 and, occasionally, 4...Be7.
The Spielmann Attack is grouped with this line, although it arises without ...Nc6: it is the position after 1. e4 e5 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. Bc4 Bc5 4. d3, which can also come from the Bishop's Opening by 3...Bc5 4. Nc3.
The play is generally positional and slow to crystallize, with both sides completing development before committing to central or kingside action. White scores slightly better than Black in online games, and draws are uncommon. The line is among the more frequently reached named positions in the Lichess database, largely because many routes from the Bishop's Opening and the Vienna lead into it.
