A rare Blackmar-Diemer sideline in which Black answers 4. f3 with 4...a6, declining to take on f3 and leaving White to regain the pawn on e4.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Gedult Defense
The Gedult Defense meets 4. f3 with 4...a6. This quiet pawn move leaves the e4-pawn in place and takes the b5-square away from White's knight and bishop. White usually recovers the pawn at once with 5. fxe4. The alternatives 5. Be3 and 5. Nxe4 are much less common, and 5. Nxe4 has scored poorly for White in the small sample of games. The engine gives White a slight edge. The line is rarely seen.
