A rare Caro-Kann sideline in which Black meets the Van der Wiel Attack with 4...Qb6, hitting b2 and d4 instead of playing the usual 4...e6.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Dreyev Defense
The Dreyev Defense answers the Van der Wiel Attack with 4...Qb6. Black postpones ...e6 and puts immediate pressure on b2 and d4. White most often replies 5. Nf3, protecting the d-pawn. The alternatives are 5. g4, which carries on the kingside pawn advance against the f5-bishop, and 5. Bd3, which offers a bishop trade. The line is uncommon. The engine gives White a slight edge, but Black has scored well in the database.
