The Hall Variation is one of White's rarer answers to the attack on the queen after 1. e4 e5 2. d4 exd4 3. Qxd4 Nc6. Instead of the standard 4. Qe3, the Paulsen Attack, the queen goes to c4, where it eyes f7 along the a2-g8 diagonal and stays clear of ...Bb4 pins. The drawback is that it takes the light-squared bishop's best square and remains a target. Most queen retreats other than 4. Qe3 allow Black a quick ...d5 that equalizes at least. Here ...d5 also gains time against the queen, and the knight can harass it from e5.
The most frequent reply is 4...Nf6, developing with pressure on e4 and also the engine's top choice. The quieter 4...d6 is next in popularity. 4...Ne5, hitting the queen at once, is a less common third option. Engines also suggest 4...Bb4+ and the fianchetto 4...g6. The position is assessed as roughly balanced, and online results are almost exactly even between the two sides.
