Dutch Defense line in which Black answers 5. Bd2 by retreating the checking bishop to e7, reaching a quiet fianchetto Dutch with no exchange of bishops.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Alekhine Variation
The Alekhine Variation is the retreat 5...Be7, played after White blocks the Nimzo-Dutch check with 5. Bd2. Black declines to exchange on d2 and returns the bishop to its usual Dutch post. The idea is that White's dark-squared bishop has been drawn to d2, where it is less useful, while Black keeps both bishops. The game then becomes a quiet maneuvering fianchetto Dutch.
