A rare branch of the Staunton Gambit in which White plays 4. g4 to harass Black's f6-knight; the engine slightly favors Black.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Tartakower Variation
The Tartakower Variation replaces the usual 4. Bg5 of the Staunton Gambit with 4. g4. This flank thrust prepares g5 to drive the f6-knight away from its defense of the e4-pawn. The most common reply is 4...d5, which supports the extra pawn. The engine prefers 4...h6, which prevents g5 outright, and 4...g6 is a rarer option. The engine gives Black a slight edge, and the line is seldom played.
