About the Slav Formation

The Slav Formation, 1. c4 Nf6 2. Nf3 g6 3. g3 c6, is an alternative to the immediate 3...d5 of the Grünfeld Formation. The c-pawn prepares ...d5 with pawn support, so that an exchange on d5 can be met with ...cxd5. This gives a Slav-type center behind the kingside fianchetto. White usually continues 4. Bg2. The less common 4. b3 has scored well for White. The engine rates the position roughly balanced, and it is seldom reached.
