About the Marshall Gambit

The Marshall Gambit is a branch of 5. Ba4, the traditional main line of the Rubinstein Variation. Black plays 5...Bc5, and after 6. Nxe5 castles instead of trying to win the pawn back. Black is a pawn down but ahead in development, with the bishop bearing on f2 and the e-file half-open. Engines rate the position as level. In a small sample of games 7. O-O is the most common reply, while the engine prefers 7. Nd3, which hits the c5 bishop. The line is seldom played.
