About the Papa-Ticulat Gambit

The Papa-Ticulat Gambit arises when White, having answered 1...e6 with 2. b3, meets 2...d5 by completing the fianchetto with 3. Bb2 rather than defending or exchanging the e4-pawn. The pawn is left hanging, and White's compensation rests on rapid development and the bishop's grip on the long diagonal toward g7 and the black kingside, an effect that grows if Black's kingside is weakened or the e5-square comes under White's control.

Accepting with 3...dxe4 is the most common reply, chosen in nearly half of the games, and it is also the line in which White has scored best on Lichess. Black can decline: 3...Nf6 develops and keeps up the pressure on e4, while 3...c5 adopts a more flexible central setup. The engine prefers quieter moves such as 3...a6, 3...Nc6 and 3...Ne7, and rates the position as roughly balanced with a marginal edge for Black. Overall White has scored somewhat better than Black in practice, with very few draws, which reflects the unbalanced, informal character of the play rather than any objective advantage.
