The Gledhill Attack is an uncommon French Defense sideline in which White meets the Steinitz Variation with an early queen sortie, 5. Qg4, aimed at g7.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Gledhill Attack
The Gledhill Attack is White's early 5. Qg4 in the Steinitz Variation of the French Defense, played instead of the usual 5. f4. The queen eyes g7 and tries to hinder Black's kingside development rather than building a broad pawn front. Black most often strikes at d4 at once with 5...c5, while 5...a6 and 5...g6 are rarer. The engine slightly favors Black, although White scores marginally better in online games.
