About the Bogoljubow Variation

The Bogoljubow Variation replaces the usual 5. a3 with 5. Bd2. The bishop guards c3 so that ...Bxc3 can be met by Bxc3, which spares White the doubled c-pawns. Black most often hits the center at once with 5...cxd4. The main alternatives are 5...Ne7 and 5...Nc6, and 5...Ne7 6. f4 is known as the Icelandic Defense. The engine rates the position as roughly balanced. It is an uncommon sideline in which White scores well in practice.
