A rare Grob Gambit sideline in which Black answers 2. Bg2 with 2...h5, giving up the h-pawn to break open White's kingside pawn structure.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Basman Gambit
The Basman Gambit arises when Black meets the Grob Gambit's 2. Bg2 with the counterthrust 2...h5 instead of taking on g4, offering the h-pawn to undermine White's advanced pawn. After 3. gxh5 White has doubled, isolated h-pawns, and the g- and h-files are half-open. The usual reply, 3...Rxh5, regains the pawn with an active rook, and Black scores well there. 3...Nf6 is the main alternative. The engine rates Black slightly better, and the line is seldom played.
