About the Botvinnik Variation

The Botvinnik Variation arises from the Capablanca Variation, 6. Rc1 c5, when Black answers 7. dxc5 with 7...Be6 instead of trying to regain the pawn at once. White keeps the extra pawn but has doubled pawns on c4 and c5. The bishop protects d5 and adds pressure against c4. Black looks for compensation along the half-open d-file and from the fianchettoed bishop on the long diagonal.
