The Grünfeld Gambit, ECO D83, arises when Black castles with 5...O-O and allows White to win the c7-pawn. Accepting with 6. cxd5 Nxd5 7. Nxd5 Qxd5 8. Bxc7 gains material but leaves White behind in development. White more often plays 6. Nf3, transposing to the Three Knights Variation, Hungarian Variation. White can also decline with 6. Rc1, the Capablanca Variation, which Black meets with 6...c5. The Botvinnik Variation continues 7. dxc5 Be6. Engines rate the position as balanced.
