Train it in TheoriaAbout the Counterthrust Variation
The Counterthrust Variation is a Grünfeld-type response to White's kingside fianchetto. After 3. g3 Bg7 4. Bg2, Black challenges the center with 4...d5 before White has developed the queen's knight. The two main replies, 5. cxd5 and 5. Nf3, are about equally common, and the latter leads to the Neo-Grünfeld Defense with g3. The less frequent 5. Nc3 has scored well for Black. The engine gives White a slight edge.
