About the Nadanian Attack

The Nadanian Attack, also called the Nadanian Variation, is 5. Na4, introduced by Ashot Nadanian in 1996. The knight moves a second time, and to the rim, to control c5 and discourage ...c5. White plans e4 to regain the tempo by chasing the d5-knight. The usual reply is 5...Bg7, as in 6. e4 Nb6 7. Be3 O-O 8. Nf3 Bg4, while 5...e5 6. dxe5 Nc6 is a sharper alternative. The engine rates the position as balanced.
