Fajarowicz Defense line in which White's 4. a3 takes the b4 square from Black and prepares Qc2, a move that theory rates as White's best.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Bonsdorf Variation
The Bonsdorf Variation, 4. a3, spends a tempo to take b4 away from Black. It rules out both ...Bb4+ and ...Nb4 and prepares Qc2 to challenge the knight on e4. Lalic and de Firmian both regard it as White's strongest reply, and engines give White a clear edge. De Firmian treats 4...Nc6 as the main answer, while Lalic prefers 4...b6. In online play 4...d6 is the most frequent choice.
