Line of the Fajarowicz Defense in which 4. Qc2 attacks Black's e4-knight at once, forcing Black to keep developing with tactical play.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Steiner Variation
The Steiner Variation, 4. Qc2, hits the e4-knight immediately from a square where the queen is harder to harass than on d3 or d4. Any knight retreat would squander Black's lead in development. Borik considers it the most testing reply. Lalic holds that 4...Bb4+ followed by ...d5 gives Black ample counterplay. After 5. Nc3 d5 6. exd6 Bf5 7. Bd2 Nxd6 8. e4 Bxc3 9. Bxc3 Bxe4, Black regains the pawn but White keeps the bishop pair.
