The Abonyi Variation of the Budapest Gambit, 4...Nxe5, regains the pawn but leaves Black's knight exposed to White's f-pawn advance.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Abonyi Variation
The Abonyi Variation, 4...Nxe5, is Black's standard reply to the Alekhine Variation. The knight recaptures the gambit pawn and restores material equality, but on e5 it stands in the path of White's f-pawn. 5. f4 is by far the most common answer, gaining time against the knight. 5...Nec6 is considered the soundest retreat, and 5...Ng6 a reasonable alternative. Less common are 5. Nf3 and 5. Nc3. Engines give White a slight edge.
