A Giuoco Pianissimo line in which White plays an early b4, gaining queenside space with tempo against the c5-bishop before castling.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Albin Variation
The Albin Variation differs from the main Giuoco Pianissimo lines because White plays 6. b4 before castling. The pawn, supported by c3, gains queenside space and drives the c5-bishop from its active diagonal. It also prepares a4, which can harass the bishop again. The cost is that White's king stays in the center and the queenside pawns become committed early.
Black almost always answers 6...Bb6, keeping the bishop on the a7-g1 diagonal, where it still eyes f2. Play then usually returns to slow maneuvering, with both sides castling short and building around ...d6 and d3. Two sacrificial alternatives exploit the uncastled king and the advanced b-pawn. 6...Bxf2+ gives up the bishop to displace White's king, and 6...Nxb4 offers a piece for pawns after 7. cxb4 Bxb4+. The engine lists both among Black's top choices, but they are seldom played, and White scores well in practice after 6...Bxf2+ and after the developing 6...Bg4. The engine rates the position as level. In online games results are almost evenly split, and draws are rare.
