Black meets the Evans Gambit by retreating the bishop all the way to f8, keeping the extra pawn but losing time; 6. d4 gives White a slight edge.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Mayet Defense
The Mayet Defense answers 5. c3 with 5...Bf8, returning the bishop to its starting square rather than to a5, e7 or c5. Black keeps the gambit pawn and avoids further harassment of the bishop, but undevelops a piece and hands White more tempi in the center. The usual reply is 6. d4, building a broad center with a slight edge for White; 6. O-O and 6. Qb3 are less common. The line is a rare sideline.
