Evans Gambit line where Black retreats 5...Bd6, guarding e5 against d4 at the cost of blocking the d-pawn; an uncommon, roughly balanced choice.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Stone-Ware Variation
The Stone-Ware Variation answers 5. c3 with 5...Bd6, a retreat that keeps the e5-pawn protected so that White's d4 does not arrive with a gain of time against it. The drawback is that the bishop obstructs the d7-pawn, slowing Black's queenside development. White most often replies 6. d4 to take the center, while 6. O-O and 6. Qb3 are less frequent alternatives. The engine considers the position roughly balanced.
