Train it in TheoriaAbout the Ulvestad Variation
The Ulvestad Variation arises from the McDonnell Defense, 5...Bc5, after 6. d4 exd4 7. O-O d6 8. cxd4 Bb6. White, a pawn down, gains space with 9. d5, driving the knight to a5, where it attacks the c4-bishop. Instead of retreating the bishop, White plays 10. Bb2 and points the dark-squared bishop down the long diagonal toward g7. The most common reply, 10...Ne7, leads into the Paulsen Variation.
