About the Canal Variation

The Canal Variation arises from the Italian Four Knights setup of the Giuoco Pianissimo after 5...d6, when White plays 6. Bg5 to pin the f6-knight against the queen. Rather than castling first or preparing c3 and d4, White develops the dark-squared bishop actively and keeps the option of doubling Black's f-pawns with Bxf6. The drawback is that the bishop can be challenged before White's king is safe, and the knight on c3 rules out the c3 pawn plan.

The most common answer is 6...h6, which is also the engine's first choice and asks the bishop to either capture on f6 or retreat. The second most played reply, 6...Bg4, mirrors White's pin on the f3-knight, while 6...Be6 offers to trade off the c4-bishop. The engine also rates the knight jumps ...Nd4, adding pressure on f3 and the pin, and ...Na5, targeting the c4-bishop, as fully adequate. The engine assesses the position as balanced. In online play the line is fairly popular, draws are rare, and White scores slightly better overall, though after 6...h6 and 6...Be6 results are almost even.
