A Giuoco Pianissimo line in which White develops the queen's knight to c3 instead of playing c3, giving a quiet, often symmetrical maneuvering game.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Italian Four Knights Variation
The Italian Four Knights Variation arises when White answers 4...Nf6 in the Giuoco Pianissimo with 5. Nc3, defending e4 with a piece. Some authors apply the label Giuoco Pianissimo above all to this position. It is often reached by other orders, such as 4. Nc3 Nf6 5. d3 or the Two Knights Defense move order 3...Nf6 4. d3 Bc5 5. Nc3. It resembles the Four Knights Game, but that route is less reliable, because after 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Bc4 Black can play 4...Nxe4.
With the knight on c3, White blocks the c-pawn and gives up the c3-and-d4 setup that the Modern Variation keeps available. There is no c3 square for a later d4, and no b3-c2 retreat for the bishop, so the Ruy Lopez-style maneuvering of the main Pianissimo lines is less relevant. White instead finishes development quickly and plays around the d5 square and the kingside, with Bg5 pinning the f6-knight a standard resource. Black can often mirror White's setup, and the central pawns tend to stay fixed, so the play turns on piece placement and minor-piece trades rather than early pawn breaks.
The most common reply, 5...d6, reinforces e5 and produces a fully symmetrical position. Here 6. Bg5 is the Canal Variation, which pins the knight right away. Castling with 5...O-O is the second choice and keeps ...d5 in reserve. The third main reply, 5...h6, rules out Bg5 and Ng5 before Black commits further, and it is the one branch where Black scores better than White in online play. The engine ranks these three moves as its top choices.
The engine rates the position as balanced. The line is among the more frequently reached named positions in online play, where results are close to even and draws are rare. Theory matters less here than in the sharper Italian lines, and the slow structure rewards an understanding of maneuvering plans more than memorized move sequences.
