About the Schlechter Defense

The Schlechter Defense meets the Allgaier Gambit's 5. Ng5 with 5...Nf6. The knight develops and attacks e4. This avoids both 5...h6, which forces the knight sacrifice on f7, and the solid 5...d5. White, a pawn down, most often replies 6. Bc4, aiming at f7, and Black has scored heavily in online games after it. The nearly as common 6. e5 gains a tempo on the knight and fares much better for White. Engines give Black a slight edge.
