A rare King's Gambit Accepted sideline in which 3. Qe2 prepares Kd1 against ...Qh4+ at the cost of blocking the f1-bishop; Black is clearly better.

About the Basman Gambit

The Basman Gambit, 3. Qe2, is one of the rarely played third-move alternatives in the King's Gambit Accepted. Instead of preventing ...Qh4+, White prepares to meet the check by stepping the king to d1, but the queen on e2 shuts in the f1-bishop and delays kingside development. Engines consider Black clearly better. In the few recorded online games Black scores heavily, and 3...Nf6 and 3...Qh4+ are the most frequent replies.
