About the Classical Defense

The Classical Defense to the Bishop's Gambit follows 3...Qh4+ 4. Kf1 with an attempt to hold on to the extra pawn. After 4...Ne7 5. Nc3 g5 6. d4 Bg7, the g-pawn supports f4 and the fianchettoed bishop bears on d4, while White's king stays uncastled on f1. The usual reply, 7. g3, strikes at the pawn chain and is called the McDonnell Attack. The Cozio Attack, 4...g5 5. Qf3, is a related branch.
