About the Lopez Variation

The Lopez Variation follows the queen check in the Bishop's Gambit with 4...g5. The pawn props up the advanced f4-pawn so that Black keeps the extra material, rather than developing as in the Cozio Variation. White most often answers 5. Nf3, gaining time against the queen. The less frequent 5. d4 has scored well, and 5. Qf3 leads to the Cozio Attack. Engines rate the position as balanced, and it is seldom played.
