The Paulsen Attack arises in the Bishop's Gambit after 3...Nf6 4. Nc3 Bb4. White meets the pin with 5. e5, gaining a tempo on the f6-knight instead of guarding e4. Black most often plays 5...Bxc3 to remove the knight first. 5...Qe7 attacks e5 along the e-file, and 5...d5, the engine's choice, hits the c4-bishop and scores well. Engines slightly favor Black, and the line is rarely played.
