A rare Kieseritzky Gambit line in which Black meets 6. Nxg4 with 6...d5, hitting e4 and the g4-knight; engines rate the sharp position as balanced.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the de Riviere Variation
The de Riviere Variation answers 6. Nxg4 with 6...d5 rather than the immediate 6...Nxe4. The pawn thrust attacks e4 a second time and opens the c8-bishop's diagonal toward the knight on g4, so White must resolve the tension at once. The usual reply is 7. Nxf6+, exchanging the attacker, while 7. e5 gains a tempo on the f6-knight instead. Engines rate the position as balanced, and Black has scored very well in the small sample of online games.
