An old name for the Allgaier Gambit, in which White sacrifices a knight on f7 to expose Black's king; unsound, but with practical chances in fast games.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Cotter Gambit
This line is the Allgaier Gambit, once called the Cotter Gambit after games Bruhl played against an English player named Cotter. Instead of 5. Ne5, White plays 5. Ng5. After 5...h6 leaves the knight without a retreat, 6. Nxf7 gives it up to drag the king forward. Black almost always takes with 6...Kxf7. Engines and modern theory consider the sacrifice unsound and give Black a clear advantage, though in online play White scores about as well as Black.
