About the Schultz Variation

The Schultz Variation is a branch of the Philidor Gambit that arises by transposition from Becker's Defense, 3...h6. The idea of that move is to prepare ...g5 so that h4 can be answered with ...Bg7. After 4. Bc4 d6 5. d4 g5 6. h4 Bg7, White plays 7. Qd3, an early queen move that guards e4. White remains a pawn down against Black's intact f4-g5-h6 chain.
