A dubious reply to the Falkbeer Countergambit in which White strikes with 3. d4 instead of capturing on d5, leaving a tense, open center.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Hinrichsen Gambit
The Hinrichsen Gambit, 3. d4, meets the Falkbeer Countergambit by hitting e5 rather than taking on d5, so that several central pawns are left in mutual contact. Theory regards the move as dubious, and the engine gives Black a clear advantage. The most frequent reply is 3...dxe4. The engine prefers 3...exd4, which also scores best for Black, while 3...exf4 is another common choice. Practical results on Lichess remain close to even.
