About the Advance Line

The Advance Line (ECO E66) arises when White answers 7...Nc6 with 8. d5, gaining space and driving the knight from c6. The pawns on d5 and c4 facing d6 and c5 give a Benoni-like structure in which Black looks for counterplay on the queenside. The most common retreat is 8...Na5, which eyes the c4-pawn, and Black scores well after it. 8...Nb8 is the main alternative, and White fares better against it. 8...Ne5 is seen less often. Engines rate the position as roughly balanced.
