About the Rare Line

This line is a move-order route into the Yugoslav Variation of the Fianchetto King's Indian. White develops with g3, Bg2 and Nc3 before Nf3, and Black strikes at d4 with 6...c5 while White's king is still in the center. The name marks a specific sequence rather than a distinct system. The most common reply by a wide margin, 7. O-O, transposes directly into the standard Yugoslav position, where Black's usual choices are ...cxd4 and ...Nc6.

With the king not yet castled, White also has two independent options. 7. d5 gains space at once and produces a Benoni-type structure in which Black seeks counterplay on the queenside. Black's results are comparatively good there. 7. dxc5 releases the central tension immediately and is the best-scoring of the three main moves for White. The engine gives White a slight edge and lists castling, the capture on c5 and the advance to d5 as its top choices. The position is reached only occasionally, and most games simply merge into mainstream Yugoslav theory.
