About the Normal Attack

The Normal Attack is reached when White answers Black's central challenge 7...e6 by simply developing with 8. Be2 rather than resolving the tension. Black nearly always continues 8...exd5, and after 9. cxd5 the position resembles a Modern Benoni with White's f-pawn already on f4, where 9...Re8 and 9...Bg4 are solid choices and 9...b5 leads to sharp play. The alternative 9. e5 is the Florentine Gambit. Engines rate the position roughly balanced.
