About the Normal Defense

The Normal Defense answers 7. d5 by developing the queen's knight to d7, instead of spending a tempo on 7...a5. White most often castles with 8. O-O, transposing to the Orthodox Variation, Positional Defense, Closed Line, where Black has scored well. The pin 8. Bg5 leads to the Keres Defense after 8...h6 9. Bh4 g5 10. Bg3 Nh5 11. h4, and White scores better with it, as with 8. Be3. Engines give White a slight edge.
